Recycle — Think for Nature

A recycling app that helps people find bins, scan products and learn what can be recycled.

Overview

The brief was to design an app that indirectly raises environmental awareness and helps governments understand how committed their constituencies are to protecting the environment. I chose to focus on recycling, and designed a product recycling app that shows people which products can be recycled, which can’t, and how to recycle them.

The problem

People often ignore initiatives like this because everyone assumes someone else in society will take care of it. The app aims to make recycling easy enough that individuals act themselves.

Key features

  • Sign in and sign up: account creation and authentication, with Google and Facebook options.
  • Map: find the nearest recycling bin, with distance, estimated time and navigation.
  • Scan: scan a product’s packaging to see its material details and the right place to recycle it.
  • Blog: the latest news and statistics, designed to keep people coming back.
  • Store: buy reusable and recyclable products, and spend coins earned in the app.
  • Help: send a query to the support team, or request a container.

Key decisions

The Store module is unusual for this category. I added it deliberately, from a different angle, to grow the number of users. I also proposed introducing gamification across the app as a further idea beyond the current designs.

Visual design

The designs include onboarding screens and high-fidelity flows in a deep forest green with soft, nature-inspired illustrations.
