Sakal — News App

Overview

News is part of everyday life, and keeping up with events means checking the daily headlines and articles. Sakal is the leading mobile news app in Maharashtra, offering a wide range of news from around the world.

The problem

The client wanted to add new features to the app and give it a new UI. The brief called for a fresh interface and an intuitive experience for every kind of reader.

The real challenge was to show many sections of news at a glance while keeping the app easy to use for every type of user.

Process

The project followed a full UX cycle:

• Stakeholder interviews and user research
• Site audit of the existing app
• Requirements definition
• Information architecture and wireframes
• Visual design
• Prototypes and usability testing

Key decisions

The research led us to add some new features alongside the main functions the app needed to show. From there we designed high-fidelity wireframes and then the final screens. The screens include a live news timeline, a category bar (Pune, state, national, global, blogs and more), a featured-story carousel and a bottom navigation for latest news, live news, e-paper and elections.
